Risk levelMedium

0–100, higher is better. How it is calculated

The website www.journalistenpreis-diakonie.de represents a non-profit initiative by the Diakonisches Werk Baden-Württemberg to award the Journalistenpreis, a prestigious journalism prize focused on social issues in Baden-Württemberg. The site provides detailed information about the award, submission deadlines, prize categories, and past winners, targeting journalists and media professionals interested in social and political reporting. The business model centers on promoting quality journalism through monetary awards and public recognition, positioning itself as a key player in the German social journalism landscape. Technically, the website is built on TYPO3 CMS, a robust open-source content management system, and employs Matomo analytics with IP anonymization to respect user privacy. The site is hosted on domaincontrol.com name servers, indicating a professional hosting arrangement. Performance and mobile optimization are good, with clear navigation and SEO-friendly metadata. The cookie consent mechanism is implemented with user choice, supporting GDPR compliance. From a security perspective, the site enforces HTTPS and uses privacy-respecting analytics. However, it lacks explicit security headers and a published security policy or incident response contacts. No vulnerabilities or exposed sensitive data were detected. The absence of terms of service is a minor legal gap. Overall, the security posture is solid but could be improved with additional headers and transparency. The overall risk assessment is low, with no signs of malicious activity or content safety concerns. Strategic recommendations include enhancing security headers, publishing a security policy, and adding terms of service to improve legal completeness and user trust. The site is well-positioned to serve its audience effectively while maintaining good privacy and security standards.

This scan rated NIS2 with an earlier keyword method that is no longer shown; rescan for the per-article view. Risk management, continuity, supply chain, training, MFA, management oversight (Art. 20) and incident reporting (Art. 23) need internal evidence, and Guard cannot tell whether NIS2 applies to this organisation.

GDPR is indicative only, based on publicly visible signals: Articles 7, 12, 13 and 32 of Regulation (EU) 2016/679 and Article 5(3) of the ePrivacy Directive. Not a certification or legal assessment.

Priority findings

5 findings rated critical or high. Fix these first.

  1. Email security

SPF, DKIM and DMARC stop others sending email that looks like it comes from your domain, a common route to phishing and invoice fraud.

    • Critical

      No email authentication configured

Domain is vulnerable to email spoofing

What to do: Implement SPF, DKIM, and DMARC immediately

  2. Security headers

Security headers are instructions your web server sends to every visitor’s browser. Missing ones leave visitors more exposed to attacks such as clickjacking and injected scripts.

    • High

      Missing X-Frame-Options header

      Prevents clickjacking attacks

What to do: Add "X-Frame-Options: DENY" or "X-Frame-Options: SAMEORIGIN"

    • High

      Missing Content-Security-Policy header

Controls resources the browser is allowed to load

What to do: Implement a Content-Security-Policy appropriate for your application

      • ASVS V3.4.3
      • OWASP Secure Headers: OWASP Secure Headers Project recommends Content-Security-Policy: default-src 'self'; form-action 'self'; base-uri 'self'; object-src 'none';…

  3. GDPR outside view

These are the privacy signals visitors and data protection authorities look for under GDPR.

    • High

      No Cookie Consent Banner found

GDPR requires explicit consent for non-essential cookies

What to do: Implement a cookie consent banner that appears on first visit

  4. SSL/TLS

TLS encrypts the connection and proves the site is really yours. Weak or expiring certificates trigger browser warnings and put traffic at risk.

    • High

      Weak Protocols Supported

      Server supports weak protocols: TLSv1.1

What to do: Disable TLS 1.0, TLS 1.1, and all SSL versions

      • CWE-327
      • OWASP A04:2025
      • ASVS V12.1.1

Results by check

Each check with its score, findings and the evidence it collected.

How this score is calculated

The security score runs 0–100, higher is better. It is the plain average of the security checks that completed in this scan, each counted equally. A check that could not run is left out: it counts neither as a pass nor as a fail.

Not counted

  • NIS2 outside view: Re-weights evidence from the TLS, email, DNS, network and hygiene checks, so counting it would count that evidence twice. Shown on its own.
  • OffSeq Observations: An AI reading of the site, useful context but not reproducible evidence. Shown on its own.

Findings that cap the score at 49

Each of these is serious on its own, so while any is present the site cannot rate better than high risk, however good the other checks are.

  • The certificate is not trusted by browsers
  • The website is not served over HTTPS
  • A database, remote desktop, file-sharing or Telnet service is reachable from the internet
  • The page loads a script from a compromised source
  • The domain registration has expired
  • SPF authorises every server to send mail as the domain

Partial scans

When the site blocks Guard or most checks cannot run, the score covers only the checks that ran (usually DNS and email), is capped at 75 and is shown as partial, without a risk level.

Business context

Business profile

The Diakonisches Werk Baden-Württemberg operates in the non-profit sector, focusing on social welfare and journalism. The Journalistenpreis is a flagship initiative that enhances the organization's visibility and influence in social policy discourse. The award's significant prize money and long-standing history (24th edition) indicate a stable funding and operational model. The partnership with Diakonisches Werk Baden and Württemberg strengthens its regional impact. The target customers are journalists producing socially relevant content, which aligns with the organization's mission. The website supports growth by providing downloadable materials and online submission forms, facilitating participation. The use of modern CMS and analytics tools reflects a moderate digital maturity. No direct revenue streams are evident on the site, consistent with a non-profit model. The partnership ecosystem includes regional Diakonie organizations, enhancing credibility and reach.

Security posture

The website demonstrates a mature security posture with mandatory HTTPS and privacy-conscious analytics via Matomo with IP anonymization. The cookie consent mechanism is well implemented, allowing users to opt-in or out of tracking cookies, supporting GDPR compliance. However, the absence of security headers such as Content-Security-Policy, X-Frame-Options, and X-Content-Type-Options represents a missed opportunity to harden the site against common web attacks. No incident response or security contact information is published, which could delay response to security events. No vulnerabilities or exposed sensitive data were detected in the provided content. Overall, the site balances usability and privacy well but should enhance technical security controls and transparency to reach a higher security maturity level.

Recommendations

  1. Implement HTTP security headers including Content-Security-Policy, X-Frame-Options, and X-Content-Type-Options to mitigate common web vulnerabilities.
  2. Publish a dedicated security policy page and provide incident response contact channels such as security@ or abuse@ email addresses.
  3. Add a terms of service page to improve legal completeness and user trust.
  4. Enhance accessibility features to improve compliance with WCAG standards.
  5. Regularly audit third-party scripts and dependencies to ensure no vulnerable libraries are used.

Technical notes

Notes

The website is built on TYPO3 CMS, a widely used open-source content management system, ensuring a stable and maintainable platform. The use of Matomo analytics with IP anonymization reflects a commitment to privacy. The site loads CSS and JavaScript assets asynchronously and uses modern HTML5 and meta tags for SEO and mobile responsiveness. Hosting is via domaincontrol.com, a GoDaddy service, indicating reliable infrastructure. Performance is moderate with room for optimization. Accessibility is basic but functional. The cookie consent mechanism is implemented with detailed user options and clear descriptions. No deprecated or vulnerable libraries were detected in the provided scripts. Overall, the technical infrastructure is solid with opportunities for modernization and enhanced security.
Standards and sources

Reference chips under each finding point to the standard, regulation or specification the finding relates to. They are taken from the official datasets below and mapped conservatively: a finding with no defensible link shows none. NIS2 and GDPR references mark where a finding is relevant evidence, not a compliance verdict. Implementing Regulation (EU) 2024/2690 binds digital infrastructure and digital service providers; for other entities it is the most detailed public reading of the Article 21 measures. WCAG, EN 301 549, European Accessibility Act and Web Accessibility Directive references name the requirement an automated accessibility rule relates to; they are not a conformance verdict.
